Performance Analysis of Empennage Configurations on a Surveillance and Monitoring Mission of a VTOL-Plane UAV Using a Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulation

A Vertical Take-Off and Landing-Plane (VTOL-Plane) is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) that combines multirotor fixed-wing configurations. It has a good cruise range compared to VTOL vehicle. Furthermore, it can take-off land vertically. This technology ideal for surveillance/monitoring missions transmitting data in real-time. study discusses the design of VTOL-Plane with preset Design Requirement Objectives (DRO), namely Maximum Weight (MTOW) 14 kg, speed 23 m/s, cruising 6 h. To maximize performance, empennage configurations on varied, then Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation was carried out. The analyzed were U-shaped boom, inverted V-tail semi-inverted boom. interpreted performance related stalling angle, flight efficiency, stability, stall speed, maneuverability. relative wind directions toward longitudinal axis UAV, also called sideslip varied. CFD results showed configuration boom suitable surveillance mission. article optimized final by adding vertical fin improve stability.
